SHOFAR POTCHEFSTROOM CAMP
My name is Shechinah Els, and I am a first-year student who had the incredible opportunity to attend Shofar’s amazing first-year camp.
Starting my journey at NWU, I found that searching for a church with the right beliefs could be challenging. However, I was fortunate to find my home in Shofar. As a Christian who grew up in the Evangelies Gereformeerde Kerk (EG Kerk), I was drawn to Shofar’s vibrant atmosphere, its strong biblical teachings, and its ability to connect with the youth.
The first-year camp was a wonderful introduction to the church. The energy and passion for God were undeniable—at times overwhelming, but always welcoming. Personally, it led me to a powerful encounter with God, strengthening my faith and ultimately guiding me to take the step of baptism. In an unforgettable moment, I was baptized in freezing water at 11 PM, filled with excitement and a renewed commitment to my faith.
SHOFAR STELLENBOSCH CAMP
At the Shofar Camp, I experienced the fear of the Lord for the first time. Before leaving, I read Isaiah 44, which speaks of God’s greatness and how He chooses us. Growing up in Durbanville, I struggled to find strong Christian male friendships, so I looked forward to meeting like-minded believers at the camp. Upon arrival, I immediately felt a stark contrast between my hometown’s reserved culture and the warmth of the camp community.
Estian and Niel, my small group facilitators, became key figures in my journey. During a deep conversation with Estian, he advised me to be vulnerable with the Lord. That night, in worship, I surrendered long-held burdens, feeling an overwhelming sense of healing. However, when the altar call came, I hesitated—until a second invitation compelled me forward. Niel prayed over me, and I felt a weight lifting from my soul.
The next day, while hiking alone, I had an honest, raw conversation with God, yet received no immediate response. Feeling disheartened, I entered worship that evening full of questions. Suddenly, I was overwhelmed with tears and the tangible presence of the Lord. I felt both His immense power and His deep pleasure in me. In that moment, I saw Jesus looking at me with joy and was given a vision of God before creation, smiling because He knew I would be His. My girlfriend, who stood by me in prayer, and Niel affirmed that I had encountered the fear of the Lord.
Since that night, my joy has been restored, and God continues to use me to spread His message of love and delight in His people. Now, I truly understand the difference between being a lifelong believer and being saved.
